Farm Happenings

We had a very busy but successful week as we hosted over a hundred visitors on the farm on Tuesday for the Kentucky Mechanical Weed Control Field day.

We are now accepting registrations for our 8 week fall CSA. Shares are smaller and will include 4-5 items weekly. We are also accepting orders for our Thanksgiving bulk boxes of veggies.

If you need to pick up your share late on Friday, please message Kristi via text or email.

Note from an Apprentice

Apprentice Mae holds garlic

Hello everyone! My name is Mae Hanna and I am a senior majoring in Natural Resources and Environmental Science (NRES) and seeking my Distillation, Wine, and Brewing certificate. My focus areas for NRES are Global Food Systems along with Economics and Policy. I am also a gardener, painter, and am the president of the UK Mycology Club, so I love all things fungi-related.

My journey with agriculture started with my grandfather, who was the Associate Dean of Instruction for nearly 30 years in the College of Agriculture at UK back in the day. I would say his influence, along with many other agriculture-based family members, sparked my interest in food systems. I’ve been involved in numerous environmental science organizations and internships since I was in high school, which is what led me towards a science path once it was time to start college. However, I didn’t end up in the field I wanted to be in. I was actually working on South Farm in 2023 when I decided to change my major to NRES, after realizing how much I loved getting my hands dirty! My experience with the farm has been nothing short of amazing, and it has been fun to be on the classroom side of things this time. There is something pretty special and insightful about hands-on learning over a traditional classroom setting. I also work at UK Dining as the sustainability intern, so it’s interesting to be working with local farmers on the sourcing side of things at work and then getting to experience the production side of things in class. Food brings people together, which is why I have loved being able to connect with others through a mutual love for food and farming through this apprenticeship, and learn more about sustainable agriculture while doing it.

After college, I hope to work within sustainable food systems to support local farmers, work in sustainable solutions in waste diversion, or go into environmental law to advocate for environmental justice. Really, I’ll be happy as long as I have my plants and my garden!

-Mae
