Note from an Apprentice

Apprentice Audrey in the field

Hello! My name is Audrey Becka, and I am a senior in UK’s Sustainable Agriculture program. My concentration is in Community Food Systems, and the program has been a wonderful opportunity to learn about and participate in local food systems in Kentucky. After graduating, I want to foster connections between people, land, and food through working in the urban ag space.

After three years at UK and engaging with local producers in Louisville, I finally found myself at the UK CSA farm in late August of this year. It wasn’t until one of our first lessons on seeding that I started to reflect on the huge influence that the relatively small (at least in scale) farm has had on the local food landscape.

Products of one of the largest local producers in the Louisville area, Rootbound, can be found in almost every local grocery store and farmer’s market. Additionally, they provide CSA boxes for nearly 1,000 families in the area. Run by graduates of UK’s Agriculture Program, the knowledge and cultural practices from UK’s farm are reflected in Rootbound’s program- down to the Winstrip seeding trays.

The influence on Louisville’s community has been immense, getting thousands engaged with local production, healthy foods, and landscapes. The UK CSA Farm fulfills its Land Grant mission, providing education, research, and support to Kentucky’s smaller-scale farms. And in turn, I think we’re all a little better off for it.”
